The PASS technique is the simplest and most widely used method for operating a portable fire extinguisher—yet many people panic or use it incorrectly during an emergency. This HSEdx micro-course teaches learners how to apply PASS (Pull–Aim–Squeeze–Sweep) step-by-step, with practical guidance on stance, distance, aiming point, and sweeping motion to control a small fire safely. The course also highlights critical safety behaviours such as maintaining an escape route, recognising when a fire is beyond first-response capability, and reporting and isolating the area after use. Ideal for workers and supervisors, this short training builds confidence and improves first-response readiness.
